This course is aimed at students who have a particular interest in working with people with special needs. It has been designed to enable students to learn the necessary practices and procedures required to work in this field. A solid knowledge base in relation to a range of special needs, to human development and more broadly to work in this area is also central to the learning outcomes of this programme. Work-experience is an integral part of the course consisting of a minimum of three weeks block placement during the academic year.

Course Content:

Care Skills, Care Support, Safety & Health at Work, Intellectual Disability Studies, Caring for Children, Early Childhood Education, Communications, Psychology for the Helping Professions Work-experience.

Entry Requirements:

Five passes in Leaving Certificate/LCVP or a merit in Leaving Certificate Applied or FETAC Level 4 Certificate. Relevant work-experience is an advantage. The academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+)

Certification:

FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Care of the Person with Special Needs (DHSXX) Certificate in First Aid. Certificate in Lifting and Handling.

Progression:

Graduates are eligible to apply to progress to Higher Education Courses through the Higher Education Links Scheme and through the Pilot Scheme. Graduates with a merit profile may apply for entry to BTEC Higher National Diploma in Applied Social Studies/Social Care in BCFE.
