Childcare

Course Code SCC, Duration: 1 Year

The childcare course is designed for students interested in working with children. Students learn about the practices and procedures involved in taking care of children. Work experience is an integral part of the course. It consists of one day each week and a two week block placement.

Course Content:

Child Development, Psychology for Helping Professions, Early Childhood Education, Caring for Children (0 - 6), Working in Childcare, Safety and Health at Work, Word Processing, Communications, Work Experience.

Entry Requirements:

Five passes in Leaving Certificate/LCVP or a merit in Leaving Certificate Applied or FETAC level 4 Certificate. Relevant work experience is an advantage. The academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+).

Certification:

FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Childcare (DCHSC), Certificate in First Aid. Certificate in lifting and handling patients

Progression:

Graduates are eligible to apply to progress to Higher Education Courses through the Higher Education Links Scheme and through the Pilot Scheme. Graduates with a merit profile may apply for entry to BTEC Higher National Diploma in Applied Social Studies/ Social Care in BCFE.
