Cinematography

This course concentrates on developing the knowledge and practical skills involved in the art of cinematography. Emphasis is placed on the roles and functions of the camera department through practical projects using a range of 16/S16mm film cameras.

Course Content:

Cinematography Lighting Skills, Cinematography Camera Operations, Experimental Film and Video Installation, Media Analysis, Communications, Image Processing, Work Experience, Photography.

Entry Requirements:

Five passes in Leaving Certificate/LCVP or a merit in Leaving Certificate Applied or FETAC level 4 Certificate. Students should bring relevant film, video, photography or storyboards to the interview. The academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+).

Certification:

FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Media Production (EMPXX)

Progression:

Graduates are eligible to apply to progress to Higher Education Courses through the Higher Education Links Scheme and through the Pilot Scheme. Graduates with a merit profile may apply for entry to BTEC Higher National Diploma Courses in BCFE.

Portfolio Guidelines:

Each candidate will be interviewed on his or her portfolio work. The portfolio interview will last approximately 20 minutes. The portfolio should contain items that are current or relevant to the application. The emphasis should be on quality and not quantity. Video work should be presented on DVD (finalised) or VHS. If your video is a group production, you should show a part that contains your own work. Photographic work should show your skills in lighting, framing and composition and possibly sequence. No more than 20 photos should be presented. Storyboards may also be presented.
