This course provides the student with the skills necessary for a career in print journalism. The emphasis is on practical work throughout the course with work placements in both years. Using the most up to date technology, QuarkXpress and Adobe Photoshop, students produce an end of year magazine.

Course Content:

Research Techniques, News Gathering and Reporting, Sub-editing, Feature Writing, Media Law, Political and Current Affairs, Creative Writing, Shorthand, Page Design and Layout (including digital photography), World Affairs and Politics, Marketing Communications and Public Relations, Media Analysis, Newspaper Production, Multimedia Web Authoring, Media Project, News Day - Realtime Newsgathering and Production.

Entry Requirements:

Leaving Certificate / LCVP with a minimum of two HC3s one of which must be in English and three passes at ordinary level or FETAC level 5 Certificate with a merit profile or BTEC National Diploma with a merit profile. Applicants must present a portfolio of published/unpublished written work at interview and demonstrate an interest in and aptitude for journalism. The academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+).

BTEC Higher National Diploma in Media Production (Print Journalism) -

Progression:

Graduates may gain exemption from one or two years of degree courses in the UK. Graduates who achieve a merit/distinction in the Higher National Diploma may apply for entry to BA (Hons) in Media Production Management in BCFE.
