Care of The Person With Special Needs

Course Code SNC, Duration: 1 Year

This one year full time course has a dual purpose award. It is designed for those who have an interest in working as a HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT(HCA) or as special needs assistant (SNA). The course is structured to give students a strong knowledge base in the practices and procedures to work in both these fields. Employment can be sought on completion of this course in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, community care or in a residential care setting. Work experience is an integral part of this course and consists of a minimum three weeks block placement during the academic year. In addition the course provides the students with a unique opportunity to participate in BCFE's Community Partnership Programme with a local primary school.

Course Content:

Care Skills, Care Support, Psychology for the Helping Professions Work-experience, Heath and Safety, Special Needs Assisting, Social Studies, Word processing.

Entry Requirements:

Five passes in Leaving Certificate/LCVP or a merit in Leaving Certificate Applied or FETAC Level 4 Certificate. Relevant work-experience is an advantage. The academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+) All applicants are required to bring two references to interview.

Certification:

FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Care of the Person with Special Needs (DHSXX) Certificate in First Aid. Certificate in Lifting and Handling.

Progression:

Graduates are eligible to apply to progress to Higher Education Courses through the Higher Education Links Scheme and through the Pilot Scheme. Graduates with a merit profile may apply for entry to BTEC Higher National Diploma in Applied Social Studies/Social Care in BCFE.
