Higher National Diploma In Applied Social Studies/Social Care

Designed and developed by the experienced staff of the Social Care Department this course covers a variety of subject areas. The course involves a comprehensive coverage of psychological and sociological perspectives. Social issues with their inherent ethical challenges are at the heart of the programme. A practical component of the course equips students with the skills and qualities required of workers in the field. Work experience is an important part of the programme. Throughout the two years there is a minimum of two periods of five week practice placements including work with travelling people, homeless people, young offenders, former prisoners, substance abusers and women in refuge. Special schools and residential centres, hospitals and rehabilitation workshops, day care and training centres also feature on our wide range of work placement options.

Course Content:

Applied Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Theories of Personality, Organisational Psychology, Applied Sociology, Mental Health Issues, Research Methods, Practice and Procedure in Social Care, Professional Relationships in Social Care, Creative Skills, Learning, Physical and Sensory Disabilities, Social Issues Practice and Policy, Health and Safety, Dissertation, Law, Social Administration and Social Policy.

Entry Requirements:

Leaving Certificate / LCVP with a minimum of two HC3s and three passes at ordinary level including English or FETAC level 5 Certificate with a merit profile. The academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+). All applicants are required to bring two references to interview.

Certification:

BTEC Higher National Diploma in Applied Social Studies.

Progression:

Graduates apply for Degree courses in Universities in Britain and Northern Ireland and may gain exemption from the first year of such courses. They also may apply for second or third year entry to relevant programmes in the Institutes of Technology.
