Higher National Diploma In Graphic Design

Course Code AGH, Duration: 2 Years

This programme offers the student the opportunity to explore the principles and procedures of Graphic Design. Particular emphasis is placed on the process of problem solving through design. Drawing plays a significant part in this course as does computer rendered art work. Students work with and receive full training in the use of industry standard hardware and software including MAC computers, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and QuarkXpress.

Course Content:

Computer Applications in Art and Design, Image Manipulation Applications, Developing a Personal Style, Ideas Generation, Typographic Skills, Photography, Historical and Contextual Referencing, Drawing Techniques and Approaches, Professional Studies, Critical Studies, Ideas in Context, Corporate Identity, Working in the Digital Environment, Design Craft Skills, Packaging, Art Direction for Advertising.

Entry Requirements:

Leaving Certificate / LCVP with a minimum of two HC3s one of which must be in Art and three passes at ordinary level or any FETAC level 5 Certificate in Art with a merit profile. Art Portfolio (See guidelines). The academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+).

BTEC Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design

Progression:

Students complete this course with a solid portfolio of graphic work, some go straight into the industry while many more go on to further education to degree level.

Portfolio Guidelines:

Please bring to the interview a professionally presented portfolio of selected recent works including:

  • Drawing showing strong use of line, tone, texture and composition. Work should be from life/observation and in a wide range of media showing a variety of subject matter.
  • Colour Work showing use of colour and tone. Work can range from painting, collage, printmaking, photography and textiles to mixed media.
  • Work of Personal Interest
  • Sketchbooks - showing development and progression of ideas and rough work demonstrating work practice and thought processes. Work should be creative and conceptual.
